Overview
Word Imposter is a fun online multiplayer word-guessing game designed for office teams, friends, and remote colleagues. Everyone installs the extension on their own Chrome browser and plays together in real time — no shared screens, no passing devices, no extra apps needed.
HOW IT WORKS
One player hosts a game and shares a 6-character room code with their teammates over Slack, WhatsApp, or any chat. Everyone else joins by entering that code in their own extension. The host picks a category and sets how many rounds to play. When the game starts, each player privately sees their role — either a Crew Member who knows the secret word, or an Imposter who has no idea what the word is and must blend in.
Players take turns submitting one word related to the secret word. Crew members try to give honest clues without making it too obvious. The Imposter listens carefully to everyone else's clues, tries to figure out the secret word, and gives a believable answer without getting caught.
After all rounds are complete, a discussion phase begins with a shared chat and a countdown timer so everyone can debate who they think the Imposter is. Then everyone votes. If the team catches the Imposter, the Crew wins. If the Imposter survives the vote, they win.
FEATURES
Real-time multiplayer — All game data syncs instantly across every player's screen using Firebase Realtime Database. No delays, no refreshing needed.
12 Word Categories — Objects, Food, Places, Animals, Movies, Office Life, Sports, Celebrities, Technology, Body Parts, Countries, and Bollywood. Each category contains 20 carefully chosen words.
Flexible category selection — The host can pick one category, choose multiple categories at once, or select all categories for a completely random mix every round.
Configurable rounds — Play 1 to 5 rounds per game. After every round, a visual progress tracker shows how many turns have been completed. When all rounds finish, voting starts automatically — no host action needed.
Visual round tracker — A row of animated circles shows exactly how many turns have been played in each round and how many are left. When a round ends, a large overlay notification appears for every player so no one misses it.
Discussion timer with chat — When voting begins, a 30-second discussion timer appears for everyone with an animated circular countdown. There is a shared chat box where players can discuss their suspicions before casting votes. The host can add 30 more seconds to the discussion at any time.
Hide your role — A Hide button lets you instantly cover your role and secret word with a single tap. If a colleague walks by your desk, just tap Hide and your screen shows nothing revealing. Tap Show to bring it back.
Imposter hint — If the Imposter happens to go first in the very first round, they receive a private category-based hint to help them give a believable answer without knowing the actual word.
Session leaderboard — Points accumulate across multiple games in the same session. Correctly identifying the Imposter earns 1 point. Successfully fooling everyone as the Imposter earns 2 points. At the end of every game, the full leaderboard appears for all players simultaneously — not just the host — so everyone sees the current rankings together.
Persistent game state — Accidentally closing the extension popup does not end your game. Reopening the extension returns you exactly to where you left off, whether you were mid-round, in voting, or waiting for results.
Play Again flow — After results are shown, the host clicks Play Again to start a new round in the same room. Other players see a clear message telling them to wait for the host, so there is no confusion about why the next game has not started.
Custom avatars — Each player picks an emoji avatar when entering their name. Tap the avatar to cycle through 20 different options. Your avatar appears next to your words, chat messages, and on the leaderboard.
Light and dark mode — Switch between a clean light theme and a dark theme using the toggle in the top bar. Your preference is saved between sessions.
Fullscreen mode — Expand the extension to fill your entire browser window for a more comfortable playing experience on larger screens.
How to Play guide — A built-in step-by-step guide explains the full game flow for new players. An FAQ section answers the most common questions about rounds, points, and what to do if something goes wrong.
