Vocabbit

Vocabbit is a fully FREE Chrome extension for English speakers learning a foreign language. It helps you capture and save new vocabulary directly from the websites you read, allowing you to learn words and phrases in real context as you encounter them. Not to mention, Vocabbit currently supports 45 different languages!

WHAT IS VOCABBIT

Vocabbit is a language learning tool that lets you highlight unfamiliar words and phrases on a webpage and instantly save them to your personal, foreign-language dictionary. Each highlight is stored together with its translation and the site URL in which it appeared, making vocabulary easier to understand and revisit.

***HOW TO USE VOCABBIT***

Create/Edit Dictionaries:
• Add a dictionary for your target language by clicking `+ New` on the home page. With any dictionary that you create, you are able to freely edit it afterwards to make necessary adjustments. You can make as many dictionaries as you desire

Activate Dictionaries:
• Click the star icon to activate a dictionary. Only ONE dictionary can be active at a time to store highlighted words. A dictionary MUST be active in order for highlights to be saved!

Highlight Words:
• Click and drag to highlight any phrase or word in a foreign-language word on a webpage. Vocabbit will instantly turn the highlighted word/phrase into a hyperlink to its translation and permanently save it in your active dictionary. You can have as many highlights as you'd like, inside of a dictionary

Remove Highlights:
• To remove a word/phrase that is highlighted, manually (with your cursor) re-highlight the the existing the highlight on the page to remove it, or delete it directly from your dictionary view interface. If you plan on deleting an entire dictionary, all highlights within that respective dictionary will also be deleted

Export/Import Data:
• Dictionary data can be exported as a JSON through Vocabbit's settings menu. This serves as an easy way to transfer dictionaries and their data to a new device through the import functionality, also located in the settings menu

NOTE: To ensure the extension is fully functioning, it is recommended that you close then reopen Google Chrome!

PRIVACY AND DATA

• All dictionaries and saved words are stored locally on your device
• No accounts are required
• No data is sent to external servers
• You fully own and control your vocabulary data
• Google Translate, the translation service used to power Vocabbit, is free of charge and does not require you to make an account. Users are redirected to Google Translate to access translations.

BUG FIXES / NEW FEATURES

• Fixing a bug within the home page and dictionary view interface that causes a very brief flicker before rendering in all dictionary/word data
• Fixing a bug that prevents the extension from persisting highlights on CNN related news articles
• Slowly adding more and more languages to the extension!
