Softlight — Page Dimmer
View on Chrome Web StoreChrome will indicate if you already have this installed.
Overview
Bright white pages are hard on the eyes, especially at night or after a long day of screen time. Softlight lays a gentle dimming layer over any page so the glare comes down while your text stays sharp and readable.
It works differently from a "dark mode" extension. Instead of trying to repaint every site — which breaks layouts and mangles images — Softlight uses a single blend layer that knocks bright backgrounds down to a tone you choose, while dark text keeps its full contrast. The result is calmer pages that still look like themselves.
Features
- Intensity dial — set exactly how much glare you want gone, 0 to 100%.
- Tint picker — choose what white becomes: neutral grey, warm amber for night, sepia, slate, or sage. Presets included, or pick any color.
- Keyboard shortcut — toggle dimming instantly with Alt+Shift+L (customizable).
- Off on this site — exclude any site you'd rather leave bright, with one click.
- Syncs with you — your settings follow you across Chrome on your devices.
Private by design
Softlight runs entirely on your device. No servers, no tracking, no analytics, no ads. It never reads or transmits the content of the pages you visit — it only dims them. Your settings stay on your own browser profile.
Good to know
Chrome doesn't allow any extension to run on its own internal pages — the Chrome Web Store, Settings, the New Tab page, and other extension pages. Those won't dim, and that's a browser security rule rather than a limitation of Softlight.
