Overview
QC Language Choice is a browser extension for Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Microsoft Edge. It is designed to make websites run by the government of Québec, including crown corporations, respect the language you set your browser to when they have official English-language content available. This is in line with the standard for automatic language detection, which is widely used on the web and is recommended by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) for reasons of accessibility and user experience.
By default, the extension makes supported websites respect the language you set your browser to when you visit the front page. This means it redirects you to the English website automatically if your browser is set to display websites in English, and it keeps you on the French website if your browser is set to display websites in French.
You can also choose to always open supported websites in English or French. If you click on an "English" or "Français" link on a supported website, the extension will remember your choice for that website and open it in that language in the future.
The extension runs on 67 websites with official English-language content, including 19 with full translations, 34 with partial translations, and 14 with only a limited subset of documents available. The full list can be viewed in our Gitlab repository: https://gitlab.com/qc-language-choice/qc-language-choice/-/blob/main/src/data/quebec-sites.json
The extension works on authentication portals like authentification.quebec.ca by default, but you can disable the extension in these cases if you prefer.
