What it does

Privacy Guard finds and analyzes the privacy policy of any website you visit, then gives you a clear, color-coded breakdown of:

What personal data is being collected (name, email, location, etc.)
What metadata and technical data is tracked (device info, IP address, cookies, browsing behavior)
How long your data is stored and retention periods
The purposes behind data collection (service delivery, advertising, analytics, etc.)
Which third parties may receive your data (ad networks, analytics providers, partners, government)
Notable concerns — unusual or potentially problematic clauses that go beyond standard practices
Each item is rated with a severity indicator (low, medium, or high) so you can quickly spot what matters most. An overall risk rating gives you an at-a-glance assessment of the site's privacy practices.

How it works

Visit any website
Click the Privacy Guard icon in your toolbar
The extension automatically locates the site's privacy policy — whether it's an HTML page, a PDF document, or hidden behind multiple clicks
AI analyzes the full policy and returns a structured, easy-to-read summary
Results are cached so revisiting a site loads instantly
You can also open Privacy Guard in Chrome's side panel for a persistent view that updates automatically as you browse between tabs.

If the extension can't automatically find a privacy policy, you can paste the URL manually and get the same full analysis.

AI-powered analysis

Privacy Guard supports three AI providers — choose what works best for you:

Google Gemini Flash (Free) — Get a free API key from Google AI Studio. Generous free tier with 15 requests per minute and 1 million tokens per day. This is the default and recommended option.
Anthropic Claude (Paid) — Use your existing Claude API key for analysis powered by Anthropic's models.
Chrome Built-in AI (Free, Experimental) — For users running Chrome Dev or Canary with the Prompt API enabled. Runs entirely on-device with no API key needed and complete privacy.
Balanced and fair analysis

Privacy Guard is designed to inform, not alarm. The AI is instructed to:

Only report what the policy actually states — no speculation or assumptions
Use conservative severity ratings — standard practices like storing your email for your account are rated "low"
Flag concerns only when clauses are genuinely unusual compared to industry norms
Clearly distinguish between expected data practices and those that warrant attention
PDF support

Many websites host their privacy policies as PDF documents. Privacy Guard handles these seamlessly, extracting and analyzing text from PDF privacy policies just like HTML pages.
