Overview
Look up any Japanese word — on any website, in one click.
Mukashi Word Popup brings the dictionary popup from mukashi.app to the entire web. Click a Japanese word on any page — a news article, Wikipedia, a blog, a study app, anywhere — and get an instant overlay with everything you need to understand it.
What you see on every lookup:
- Reading — hiragana reading of the clicked word
- Base form — the dictionary form for conjugated verbs and adjectives
- Conjugation label — plain past, te-form, causative, passive, and more, named in plain English
- Part of speech — noun, verb, adjective, particle, auxiliary, and so on
- Definition — Jisho-backed English glosses
- JLPT level — N5 through N1 badge when available
- Pitch accent — visual mora diagram so you can hear the word the right way
- Grammar explanations — particles (は, が, を, に, から…) and auxiliaries (です, ます, ている…) get plain-English function notes instead of a dictionary entry
Built for real reading practice. The popup appears right where you clicked, viewport-clamped so it never falls off screen. Press Escape or click anywhere else to dismiss. Recent lookups are cached locally so repeat clicks are instant — no network round-trip.
Privacy first. Only a small text window around the clicked word is sent to mukashi.app for tokenization. Your full page content is never read or transmitted. Password fields, inputs, and editable areas are always ignored.
Free, no account needed. This extension is a free companion to mukashi.app, an AI-powered Japanese reading practice tool that generates personalized stories from your own vocabulary list.
