Blocks unwanted tracking by telling Google Analytics JavaScript not to send information to Google Analytics, letting you maintain privacy on your website or online activities. Most web developers and bloggers benefit from this extension as it helps protect user data and prevent unnecessary tracking. By using this extension, users can take control of their online presence and limit the amount of data shared with Google Analytics.

Overview

To provide website visitors the ability to prevent their data from being collected and used by Google Analytics, we have developed the Google Analytics opt-out Browser extension for the Google Analytics JavaScript (ga.js, analytics.js, dc.js).

If you want to opt-out, download and install the extension for your web browser. In order to function, the opt-out extension must be able to load and execute properly on your browser. Updates to your browser or operating system may affect the functionality of the opt-out extension. More information about managing your extensions for Chrome can be found at https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/187443?hl=en.

By installing this extension, you agree to the Chrome Web Store Terms of Service at https://ssl.gstatic.com/chrome/webstore/intl/en/gallery_tos.html and the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on Terms of Service at https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout/intl/en/eula_text.html.

What This Extension Does

It's designed for individuals who want to opt out of Google Analytics tracking on websites they visit. With over 1 million users, it's a popular tool in the Productivity/tools category.

Permissions Explained

  • noneexpected: This extension does not request any permissions from Chrome, which means it cannot access sensitive data or perform actions that require permission.
Technical: The absence of requested permissions is a good practice in terms of security and user trust. However, this also limits the extension's functionality to only what can be achieved through content script injection.

Your Data

The extension accesses no data on your device and does not send any data to external servers. However, it does inject a content script into websites you visit, which may collect some basic information about the website's functionality.

Technical Details

The extension contacts tools.google.com (for EULA agreement) and github.com (for JavaScript files). No sensitive data is sent or received.

Code Findings

Creates script elements dynamicallyMedium

This means the extension can inject code into websites you visit, which may collect some basic information about the website's functionality. However, this is a common practice for extensions that need to interact with web pages.

Technical: The extension uses JavaScript files (2 x 6 KB) to dynamically create script elements and inject them into websites. This allows it to interact with web pages and collect some basic information.

💡 Legitimate extensions often use this technique to interact with web pages, so it's not inherently malicious.

Bottom Line

The Google Analytics Opt Out extension is a legitimate tool that provides users with control over their online tracking. While it does inject code into websites you visit, this is a common practice for extensions and does not pose a significant security risk. Users can trust this extension to prevent data collection by Google Analytics.
