Overview
I created this extension because I connect my PC to a CRT TV using an HDMI-to-composite video converter. The problem I ran into is that most modern video is designed for 16:9 displays, and even older 4:3 content is often presented inside a 16:9 player with pillar boxes on the sides.
When that 16:9 output is converted to 4:3 for a CRT, the result is often wrong:
-The image becomes horizontally squished
-Black bars appear on the sides
CRT Video Stretch fixes this by allowing you to horizontally stretch HTML5 videos directly in the browser, restoring the correct proportions on a 4:3 display and cropping away unwanted pillarboxing.
What this extension does
-Applies a horizontal stretch to HTML5 <video> elements
-Corrects 16:9 → 4:3 squashing caused by HDMI-to-analog video converters
-Crops pillar boxes added by modern video players
-Automatically reapplies your saved settings to new videos
-Works on sites like YouTube and other HTML5 video platforms
-Designed for retro and legacy display setups
-This extension is especially useful if you:
-Use a CRT television as a display
-Output video through HDMI-to-composite or HDMI-to-component converters
-Watch modern web video on 4:3 hardware
-Want consistent video sizing without manually adjusting every video
Features:
Adjustable horizontal and vertical scaling
-Left/right up/down centering
-Live preview while adjusting
-Optional per-site settings
-One-click preset for correcting 16:9 → 4:3 output
-Settings are stored locally and automatically applied
Privacy:
-This extension does not collect or transmit data.
-All settings are stored locally using Chrome’s built-in storage.
CRT Video Stretch is a simple utility for making modern web video look correct on classic 4:3 displays.
